Game of Thrones Fans Start Petition to Re-Shoot Final Season

It is pretty clear that Game of Thrones might have the worst finale of any HBO ever shot. Long-time fans are immensely displeased with the seemingly out of nowhere twists and turns from the penultimate episode, The Bells, which aired on May 12th. Click here to read our review and recap of the episode. The Game of Thrones show finale will air on May 19th.

Well, some fans actually want to do something about it.

At the time of this publication, over 400,000 fans have signed a petition on Change.org begging HBO to re-write and re-shoot the final season to make it make sense with the previous seasons.

It's no stretch of the imagination to say that there's been a lot of strife after the last couple seasons. Many fans agree that the show has gotten steadily worse over the past few seasons, ever since George R.R. Martin left the production to finish up the sixth and seventh books. After Episode 5 of the final season came out, fan outrage has been maxed out completely.

The petition playfully toys with showrunners' love of twisting viewers' expectations:

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
This series deserves a final season that makes sense.
Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!

Now, it should be well-known at this point, but signing a petition doesn't do anything. There isn't a certain number of fans that can sign the petition that will automatically lead to the desired fix. You can't force HBO to reshoot everything. But it does give a unified voice to fans who want to voice their displeasure, which could mean future changes. So don't expect a reshoot, but it could mean a switch-up for the writers who are a part of the five new Game of Thrones-based shows HBO is currently working on. Or even a change in direction for those shows.

(Even Arya's like, "I'm getting the fuck out of this show!"

It could even show George R.R. Martin that an ending geared this way will bring displeasure to his many fans. Not that he will pay any mind as he is finishing the sixth and seventh book, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, respectively.

It can be difficult to continue to enjoy a favorite series after the creators nuke it from orbit and destroy everything you love. Just ask Sword of Truth fans, or the Anne Rice fandom. But it's also important to remember that these stories aren't ours. It may feel like they belong to us because we identify with them so deeply and we love them so much. But they belong to their creators.

Want a series that ends the way you want it to? There's no better way than to pick up a pen and start writing it yourself. Who knows? You could be the next George R.R. Martin. And we here at AleHorn could be complaining about you.

You can sign the petition here.

And while you're over on change.org, why not check out some other petitions with a little more weight? This season has been a great injustice, but there are a lot of other evils out there that have more real-world consequences. Let us know in the comments what other petitions you support.

Need to drown your sorrows? We don't blame you. Our Hand of the King bottle opener will remind you of the good times-- and the good hand of the kings, before they were assassinated by Ilyn Payne or the showrunners. Get one for yourself and one for a friend.
